Education

Education: engineering at the Politecnico di Milano and the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería

M.Sc. in Energy Engineering

Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy

Thesis record dated 24 July 2020

Thesis: “Efficiency optimization of combined cycle power plants working at partial loads: the case study of ChilcaUno”, held in the university’s institutional repository. The Politecnico di Milano is 87th in the world and 1st in Italy in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and 20th in the world for Engineering & Technology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

B.Sc. in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering

Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería, Lima, Peru

The undergraduate engineering degree, earned in Lima before the move to Milan.

My training at Politecnico di Milano taught me to analyse complex physical and mathematical systems by breaking them down to first principles. An M.Sc. in Energy Engineering covers thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, numerical calculus and applied physics, well beyond the HL syllabus; in a lesson, that training serves one question: where exactly does the student’s reasoning break?

How these dates are checked

  • Google sets the date of each public review, and anyone can read the reviews and their dates on the Business Profile; Google’s own email of 2 June 2020 confirms the profile as verified.
  • The Politecnico di Milano’s institutional repository dates the thesis record, on a permanent handle link.
  • The emails of 8 April 2016, March 2018 and 2 June 2020 carry a DKIM signature (DomainKeys Identified Mail): a cryptographic signature the sending mail server adds to each message. Each still verifies against the sender’s public key, which shows that neither the text nor the date has changed since it was sent.

Teaching

How Renzo Diaz teaches: diagnose the cause, re-engineer the explanation, verify the transfer

In engineering, when a complex system fails, the first step is not more effort but a diagnosis that finds the exact point where it breaks.

An AI tool can now produce a worked solution in seconds, so the final answer is no longer the scarce part. The IB Diploma does not assess whether a student can follow a solution; it assesses whether they can recognise the structure of an unfamiliar question, choose a method under time pressure and justify every step.

A lesson works in three moves, informed by root cause analysis in engineering: the practice of tracing a failure back to its first cause.

  1. Diagnose the cause

A difficulty in IB calculus or physics is rarely about the current topic alone; it is usually a gap in algebra, functions or proportional reasoning from earlier years. How the student writes, hesitates and starts a problem during the lesson shows where the reasoning breaks.

  2. Re-engineer the explanation

Instead of shortcuts or “tricks” that break when an exam question changes format, the explanation is rebuilt around the student’s own reasoning until the concept makes sense to them, while earlier gaps are closed alongside the current Diploma material.

  3. Verify the transfer

The IB rewards students who can start an unfamiliar question under time pressure. Understanding is checked on problems the student has not seen, and every line of working is justified, because method marks depend on it.

How lessons run online: a shared whiteboard and a searchable session archive

Since 2020 lessons have run online, one-to-one: lessons of 60 or 90 minutes, once or twice a week, on a setup built for working through mathematics and physics live.

  • Live on a shared whiteboard

Lessons run one-to-one on Zoom with a shared Excalidraw whiteboard. Derivations and diagrams are drawn live on a tablet, and the student works on the same board, so the reasoning is visible as it happens.

  • Every session recorded, summarised and searchable

Every programme includes the recording of each lesson, an AI-generated summary linked to it and a searchable archive of the sessions. A student can return to an explanation before a mock or the final papers, and a family can see what was covered.

  • Practice matched to each session

Between sessions, exercises are assigned to match what each session showed, and the answers that went wrong become the next lesson’s material.

Questions

Questions about Renzo Diaz: background, qualifications and lessons

Who is Renzo Diaz?

A private IB Mathematics and IB Physics tutor with a public track record: one-to-one since April 2016, online worldwide, based in Italy. He holds an M.Sc. in Energy Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano. His public record on Google is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 reviews since June 2020 (as of October 2026), and two students’ results are documented by name.

What IB results has Renzo Diaz documented?

Every documented IB result is a 6 or a 7. A final 7 in IB Physics SL from a 3 and a final 6 in IB Math AI HL from a 4, in May 2025 (the first session of the new Physics guide), and 7 in both IB Math AI SL exam papers from a 3, in May 2024. Each rests on a document held on file and the student’s own public Google review; the sources are in the documented cases.

What are Renzo Diaz’s academic qualifications?

An M.Sc. in Energy Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano and a B.Sc. in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Lima. His thesis, on optimising the efficiency of combined-cycle power plants at partial load, is in the university’s institutional repository, dated 24 July 2020; the B.Sc. came first, in Lima, before the move to Milan. The Politecnico di Milano is 87th in the world and 1st in Italy in the QS World University Rankings 2027.

Is Renzo Diaz a member of Mensa?

Yes, of Mensa Italia, whose admission requires a supervised IQ test score in the top 2%. A separate WAIS-IV assessment by Método Divergentes in Valencia measured an IQ of 139, with working memory and processing speed at the 99th percentile. Both are personal facts on his profile; the record of his teaching is the documented results and the public reviews.

Is Renzo Diaz a schoolteacher or an engineer?

A private IB tutor who trained as an engineer. He works as an independent tutor, not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate Organization, and his teaching record is ten years of one-to-one IB tutoring: Lima from 2016, Milan from 2018, online since 2020.

How long has Renzo Diaz been tutoring IB Mathematics and Physics?

Since April 2016: ten years of one-to-one IB teaching. The earliest record is the email of 8 April 2016 from an IB Mathematics student at Colegio Peruano Británico in Lima, held on file with its signature intact; in March 2018 he began teaching IB Physics HL in Milan through Pi Greco Milano, and since 2020 he has taught online. His public Google record starts in June 2020, with at least one review in every year since.

Why does an engineering background help in IB Mathematics and Physics?

Engineering trains a way of working: break a system into first principles, find where it fails, then test the fix. Applied to a student’s work, it means finding the step where the reasoning breaks rather than re-explaining the whole topic, then checking the understanding on questions the student has not seen. The M.Sc. also covered thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, numerical calculus and applied physics, well beyond the HL syllabus.

Where is Renzo Diaz based, and in which languages does he teach?

Based in Italy, teaching online worldwide, in English or Spanish. He also speaks Italian, but the IB is examined in English, French or Spanish, not in Italian.

Can I check these facts myself?

Most of them: the degree, the reviews, the dates and the documented results each point to a record outside this site. The degree is in the Politecnico di Milano’s repository; the 19 reviews are verifiable on Google, on the Business Profile, which Google’s own email of 2 June 2020 confirms as verified; the Apprentus profile lists him as an instructor since January 2019; and each documented result names its sources on the results page. The Mensa membership and the WAIS-IV report are personal records and are not published.
