IB Maths Tutor in Milan — AA & AI, SL & HL, with Documented Results

Renzo Diaz is an IB Mathematics tutor based in Milan, teaching one-to-one online across all four courses — Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, Standard and Higher Level. His Milan cases come from students' own Google reviews on the public Business Profile. Places are limited, with a documented Grade 3 to two Grade 7 papers in IB Math AI SL. Lessons are in English or Spanish.

Milan international schools run on their own rhythm: iSAMS notifications, specific progress-comment formats, DP1 subject-choice windows that lock in during Year 11. Most of that context is invisible from outside the system, and most tutoring never accounts for it. My documented cases are real students, each one a public Google review you can open yourself.

When a school report arrives, I know what it measures, what it omits, and what to do about it before the next parent meeting — not after it. That comes from years of working directly with Milan school systems, not from being nearby.

IB Maths in Milan: four situations families bring to me

The unexplained Grade 4: the report card says it, nobody can say why.

School systems like iSAMS record outcomes, not causes: a grade, a comment, sometimes a commendation — rarely the reason underneath. Before any plan is built, I diagnose the exact step where the reasoning broke, whether that step lives in this term's topic or three years back in algebra. That diagnosis, not the report card, is what the weekly work runs on.

DP1 subject choice: decided in Year 11, with half the information.

Milan international schools ask families to lock AA or AI, SL or HL while the student has never seen an IB paper. The choice shapes university options, and it is expensive to reverse mid-Diploma. I walk families through both courses with real exam questions before the school deadline — including what each university faculty actually requires.

Mid-Diploma transfer: arrived from another curriculum, partway through.

Milan absorbs a lot of relocating families, and a student arriving from Singapore, Dubai or a US high school inherits the IB clock mid-cycle with gaps shaped by a different syllabus. The first month is structural triage: find where the previous curriculum left holes, rebuild those, and align to the Milan school's assessment calendar from the next mock onwards.

Liceo-to-IB transition: your child comes from the Italian system.

The passage from liceo mathematics to IB is wider than most families expect: different notation habits, a calculator policy (AI allows the GDC everywhere; AA Paper 1 bans it), and a marking culture that pays for method as much as answers. Students coming up from the Italian system are usually stronger than their first IB grades suggest — the gap is translation, not ability, and it closes fast once named.

The method

How IB Maths lessons work for Milan families: a weekly system built around the school calendar

Every week opens with last week's wrong answers, because wrong answers are the cheapest source of marks. We work on what is live from school, advance the syllabus in order, and plan around what Milan school calendars actually contain: mock weeks, IA deadlines, report cycles. Every session is recorded, summarised, and archived into a searchable library. Sessions run online; in Milan, in-person sessions can be arranged on application.

Documented · public reviews since 2020

Documented IB Maths result from Milan: Grade 7 in both IB Math AI SL exam papers, from a 3 (May 2024)

A student at the British School of Milan publicly described moving from Level 3 in IB Math AI SL to Level 7 in her final exam papers, across a full two-year Diploma delivered entirely online; the IB Math AI SL exam results are documented, component by component (May 2024). That is the point: the method does not depend on geography, only on rhythm.

More Milan cases are among the public reviews on Google — students who came up through the Italian system, moved between curricula, or worked across the IGCSE-to-IB step. Each is verifiable on Google, with the date Google shows on the profile. The method also travels beyond Milan: Blake Eustaquio took IB Math AI HL with me from Panama, and the IB Math AI HL final result, a 4 to a final 6 in May 2025, is documented in full.

I don't promise grades. What I offer is documented, checkable precedent — and the honest answer that your result depends on your starting point, the work between sessions, and the time available.

Questions, answered

IB Maths tutoring in Milan: questions parents ask

Which Milan schools have your students attended?

Students I've worked with have attended St. Louis School Milan, the American School of Milan, the British School of Milan – Sir James Henderson, the International School of Milan, and schools in nearby Como. The Milan outcomes on the results page are summarised from students' own public Google reviews. Which schools around Milan teach the IB Diploma, and which Maths courses each publishes, is set out in the Milan schools guide, with a page each for St. Louis, the American School and the British School.

Can you help us choose between AA and AI before the school deadline?

Yes, and it is one of the highest-value conversations of Year 11. We look at real exam questions from both courses, the student's algebra fluency, and the entry requirements of target university courses, then decide on evidence — better settled in Year 11 than reversed mid-Diploma.

My child is arriving mid-Diploma from a different curriculum. Is it too late to start?

No, but the first month looks different: structural triage before syllabus progress — finding exactly where the previous curriculum left gaps, rebuilding those, then aligning to the new school's assessment calendar from the next mock onwards. The earlier this starts after arrival, the more runway there is before exams. What to confirm with the new school before accepting the place is in the mid-year move checklist.

Do you teach IB Physics or IGCSE for Milan families too?

Yes, this page covers IB Mathematics specifically. For IB Physics, see the IB Physics tutor page; for IGCSE Maths and Physics, see the IGCSE tutor page. Same method, same application process.

What language are the lessons in?

English or Spanish, whichever suits the student. The IB is examined in English, French or Spanish, not in Italian, so the course itself has no Italian version. I also speak Italian.

Free IB Maths strategy call for Milan families: is this the right fit?

The strategy call is free and commits you to nothing. If I don't think the system will move your child meaningfully, I will tell you directly — I'd rather lose a client than take on a case I can't help.
