IB Physics SL Tutor Online — Current Syllabus, with a Documented Final 7
Renzo Diaz is an IB Physics SL tutor based in Italy, with an M.Sc. in Energy Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, teaching IB since April 2016 and one-to-one online since 2020. The work follows the current syllabus (first exams 2025): five themes, Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data-based questions, Paper 2 and the scientific investigation. Documented online result: IB Physics SL from a 3 on the first Diploma report card to a final 7 (May 2025), the first session of this syllabus. Lessons are in English or Spanish.
Watch your child sit Paper 1B. They recognise every formula on the sheet — and then freeze on a graph of real, messy data. The physics content is rarely the weak point. The weak point is the step where recognition stops and reasoning has to start: selecting the right relationship for a situation they have never seen before.
This page covers SL specifically; the wider IB Physics tutoring practice includes HL and IB Maths. The work is diagnostic, not encyclopaedic: we find the precise step where the reasoning broke — the algebra inside the physics, the misread graph, the wrong first method choice — and practise that step until it holds under exam conditions.

Why IB Physics SL grades stall: five situations I work on
Formula selection: you know the equations, but not which one to reach for.
This is the single most common wall at SL. The data booklet is open on the desk, every relationship from Theme A through Theme E is technically available, and the question describes a situation that matches none of the examples you practised. So you guess — usually the formula that contains the numbers given. The fix is not more formulas. It is training the selection step itself: reading a situation, naming the physics involved, and only then reaching for an equation. We practise exactly that, from unfamiliar questions, every week.
Data-based questions: the concepts are fine, the unfamiliar graph isn't
You understand the concepts. Then Paper 1B hands you a graph with error bars, a table of real measurements, and a question about an experiment you have never seen, and the concepts stop helping. Data-based questions test a separate skill: extracting information from numbers, units, and uncertainty, then reasoning with it under time pressure. It is a trainable skill. We work through past 1B questions methodically until reading unfamiliar data feels routine rather than threatening.
Maths inside physics: it's wearing a physics costume, but it's algebra underneath
A large share of lost SL marks are not physics errors. They are algebraic rearrangement errors, trigonometry mistakes in fields and waves questions, misread logarithmic or straight-line graphs, and dropped units. If this is you, more physics revision will not fix it. I also tutor IB Maths — AA SL and AI SL — so we treat the mathematics inside the physics as first-class material: integrated practice, not a separate subject bolted on.
Uncertainty handling: quietly costing you marks everywhere
Absolute and percentage uncertainties, significant figures, error bars, gradients with uncertainty ranges — these appear in Paper 1B, in Paper 2, and throughout the scientific investigation. Most students treat them as decoration. By default the mark schemes don't penalise units or significant figures — which is exactly why the questions that do demand them, or ask for a value and its uncertainty stated to a matching precision, catch students out. We make uncertainty handling automatic, because at SL it is one of the cheapest sources of marks available.
Method-selection pace: the wrong first choice costs you twice
Choosing the wrong approach to a Paper 2 question does not just lose the marks for that question. It burns five or ten minutes you needed elsewhere. Pace problems at SL are usually method-selection problems in disguise. We train first-move decisions: how to scan a question, commit to an approach quickly, and recognise within ninety seconds whether it is working.
Syllabus coverage
IB Physics SL syllabus coverage: the five themes of the current course
The current syllabus, first assessed in May 2025, is organised into five themes. SL students study the core content without the AHL extensions. We cover all of it, weighted towards wherever your diagnosis shows the reasoning breaks — not equally, because equal coverage is how courses waste time. If you are still deciding between SL and HL, the comparison page may help. Coverage below follows the official IB Physics subject guide.
Theme A — Space, time and motion: kinematics including projectile motion (and the qualitative effect of fluid resistance), forces and momentum including impulse, one-dimensional collisions and circular motion, and work, energy, power and efficiency
Theme B — The particulate nature of matter: thermal energy transfers including black-body radiation (the Stefan–Boltzmann and Wien laws), the greenhouse effect and Earth's energy balance, the gas laws and the kinetic model of an ideal gas, and current and circuits including internal resistance
Theme C — Wave behaviour: simple harmonic motion, the wave model, wave phenomena (refraction, total internal reflection, double-slit interference), standing waves and resonance, and the Doppler effect for sound and light — the SL core of each
Theme D — Fields: gravitational fields (Kepler's laws, Newton's law of gravitation), electric and magnetic fields (Coulomb's law, field lines), and the motion of charged particles in electric and magnetic fields — electromagnetic induction is HL-only in the current syllabus
Theme E — Nuclear and quantum physics: the structure of the atom and atomic energy levels, radioactive decay and binding energy, fission, and fusion and stars (including the HR diagram and stellar parallax) — quantum physics itself is HL-only in the current syllabus
Paper 1A technique: multiple-choice pacing, elimination strategy, and the question types that recur
Paper 1B technique: data-based questions — reading unfamiliar graphs, handling units and uncertainties, structuring multi-mark answers
Paper 2 technique: structured and extended-response answers on the core, command terms, and mark-scheme discipline
The scientific investigation (IA): marked on four criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — with guidance that stays within the IB's academic honesty rules
What's actually examined
IB Physics SL exam structure: two papers and one investigation
The current IB Physics course was first examined in May 2025. At SL the assessment is two written papers and the scientific investigation; there is no Paper 3 or options paper, and a calculator and a clean copy of the physics data booklet are required in every written paper.

Online lessons
How online IB Physics SL lessons work: diagnosis first, then a weekly rhythm
We start by finding the exact step where your reasoning broke — not the topic, the step. Sessions then run on a fixed weekly rhythm that opens with last week's wrong answers, because that is where the information is. Every session is recorded, summarised and archived into a searchable library, so revision before Paper 1 and Paper 2 means reviewing your own documented weak points, not re-reading a textbook. We work over Zoom with a shared Excalidraw whiteboard, which suits physics particularly well: free-body diagrams, field lines and graph sketches drawn live, together.
From an unfamiliar Paper 1B graph to a defensible answer
Paper 1B puts real, messy data in front of the student. We practise reading what the graph shows, choosing the relationship it supports and writing reasoning a marker can follow, including how the uncertainty is handled.
Return to the part you need to practise
The archive connects each session summary to the recording, so a student can go back to the relevant explanation between lessons.
Online teaching publicly described in July 2020
A Google review from an IB student, dated , describes my use of a touch tablet and screen-shared online lessons: a dated public reference for the online setup already in place at that time, also mirrored on Trustindex.
IB Physics SL in public Google reviews: a second final 7, and two years to university
Beyond the documented case above, two more public reviews describe Physics with me. Each card says what its review states, and what it does not. Each review is dated by Google and verifiable on Google, on the Business Profile.

A second final Grade 7 in IB Physics SL
Final Grade 7 in IB Physics SL, as the review states
Physics SL prepared alongside Maths HL, with one or two lessons a week. The review starts from problems with self-confidence and with how to approach the questions, and ends calm and prepared for the exams.

Two years of Physics, then applied physics at university
Physics and Mathematics through the two-year Diploma, with many past-paper questions solved in class and independently, the diploma and results received, and lessons set to continue during an applied physics degree. The review does not state the course levels or the final grades.
IB programmes start at €400 a month; the exact arrangement depends on where you are, how far the exams are, and what the diagnosis shows, and it is set out before you commit to anything. That price is for booking directly with me; tutoring platforms that list me add their own commission. The strategy call is free, the first month is four one-hour sessions, and there is no minimum term after it.
Q.02
Do you cover the current syllabus, with first exams in 2025?
Yes — and the differences matter. The current syllabus is organised into five themes (A through E), Paper 1 now has two parts (1A multiple choice and 1B data-based questions), and the old options papers are gone: there is no Paper 3 at either level. If your school materials still reference the old structure, we will work from the current guide. I have taught it from the first cohort: Blake Eustaquio sat those first May exams in 2025 and finished with a 7.
Q.03
Can you help with the IB Physics SL IA?
Yes, within the IB's academic honesty rules. The scientific investigation is worth 20% of your grade, capped at 3,000 words, and marked out of 24 on four criteria worth 6 marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It can be run collaboratively in groups of up to three, but every student needs their own research question and writes their own report. Most lost marks come from weak methodology and shallow data analysis. I help you sharpen the research question, design a sound method, and analyse and evaluate your own data properly. The investigation remains yours. Starting points by theme are in 15 IB Physics IA ideas. For the IB's actual guidance on how much data is enough — not the invented formulas that circulate online — see the IB Physics IA guide.
Q.04
My child also struggles with the maths in Physics — can you cover both?
Yes, and this is common at SL. Rearranging equations, trigonometry in fields and waves, graph interpretation, and uncertainty calculations are maths problems wearing a physics costume. I tutor IB Maths alongside Physics, so we address the mathematics inside the physics questions directly, as integrated practice rather than two separate subjects. How uncertainties are calculated and propagated is set out in uncertainties in IB Physics.
Q.05
When should we start for the May exams?
Earlier than feels necessary. September or October of the final year gives us time to diagnose properly, build the weekly rhythm, and cover the IA before mocks. Starting in March still works, but the focus narrows to exam technique and the highest-yield gaps. Whatever the month, the strategy call is the honest place to assess what is realistic.
Q.06
Can a student go from a 3 to a 7 in IB Physics SL?
It has happened, and it is documented: Blake Eustaquio went from a 3 on his first Diploma report card to a final Grade 7 in May 2025, working with me online every week from September 2023 — two years, not a last-minute push. The weekly rhythm did the work: problems from school, the syllabus ahead, then practice questions on whatever he had got wrong. The IB Physics SL final result is documented in full.
Q.07
How long have you been teaching IB Physics online?
My teaching practice has been online since 2020; a Google review dated 12 July 2020 already describes teaching with a touch tablet and screen-shared online lessons. My IB teaching began in April 2016, and the dated record on my About page includes IB Physics HL work in Milan from March 2018. The documented IB Physics SL case ran online from September 2023 to May 2025.
Q.08
Can my child take online IB Physics SL lessons from another country?
Yes, subject to a suitable recurring slot. I’m based in Italy and teach online in English or Spanish; the documented SL case was taught from Italy to a student in Panama. When you request a strategy call, share the student’s country, time zone, school timetable and exam session, so we can confirm the schedule works before starting.
Q.09
How do we start?
Request a strategy call through the site. If the time and terms fit, you choose a slot straight away. The call is free — 15 minutes with a parent, then 30 with the student on a topic they choose, and you see how I work before anyone commits. If the fit looks right, the first month is four one-hour sessions, with no minimum term after it. Nobody pays anything and nobody commits to anything before the call has happened.
Free IB Physics SL strategy call: find the next step in your child’s preparation
I take a limited number of students. If your Physics SL problem is recognition without reasoning — formulas memorised, method selection broken, data questions freezing you — that is exactly what the diagnosis is built to find. Request a strategy call, and see how I work before you decide anything.
