IB Math — Analysis and Approaches HL

IB Math AA HL tutor for the most demanding course in the Diploma

Renzo Diaz is an IB Math AA HL tutor working one-to-one and online with students worldwide, based in Italy. Places are limited. He helps HL students move from surviving the pace to actually commanding it — proof, Paper 3, the HL Exploration — with diagnosis-first tuition built around their own wrong answers. Lessons are in English or Spanish.

AA HL is the point where IB mathematics stops rewarding execution and starts demanding proof. Your child can follow every worked example in class and still freeze when Paper 3 hands them an unfamiliar three-page scaffold. That is not a knowledge gap, and more explanation will not close it. It is a reasoning gap — and it has an exact location.

That is how I work as an AA HL tutor online. Every week opens with the questions you got wrong last week — not a fresh topic, not a lecture. We locate where your argument collapsed: an unproven claim in an induction step, a substitution chosen because it was the only one you knew, a vector problem set up in the wrong plane. Then we rebuild that step until it holds under exam conditions. This page covers AA HL; the other three courses sit under IB Math tutoring. I am based in Italy and teach students worldwide, one-to-one and online. In one captured ChatGPT answer to “best ib math tutor in europe”, I was listed first, as “best for IB Maths AA HL”. If that sounds like what HL actually requires, read on.

The IGCSE-to-HL gap: top of the class before, surviving rather than learning now.

HL hits with pace and depth at the same time. The syllabus does not pause for consolidation — one week is further calculus, the next is complex numbers. Students who cruised through prior courses by being fast find that speed no longer compensates, because HL questions resist the obvious first method. The diagnosis is usually not "weak at maths" but "no selection layer": you have many procedures and no way to choose between them under time pressure.

Proof and "show that" questions: they feel like a different subject entirely.

AA HL is the first course where you must build an argument rather than execute one. Proof by induction, proof by contradiction, the careful "show that" derivations in Paper 1 — these are marks awarded for the structure of your reasoning, not the final line. Many strong students lose their first HL marks here because nobody has ever taught them what a valid argument is. We work on it directly: claim, justification, conclusion, in that order, until it becomes reflex.

Paper 3: the unseen-problem paper that undoes you.

The HL-only paper is two extended problems built on unfamiliar scaffolding — notation you have never seen, a guided investigation that later asks you to leave the scaffolding behind. Students who are excellent at Papers 1 and 2 still freeze in Paper 3 because they trained on recognisable question types, and Paper 3 is designed to have none. Preparing for it means practising reasoning with a GDC inside unfamiliar structures, not memorising more types. See the FAQ below for what makes it different.

The university-requirement doubt: you chose HL for it, and now you're not sure.

Maths, physics, engineering and economics at competitive universities frequently require or strongly prefer AA HL. Some students take it for the transcript rather than the love of the subject, then find DP1 brutal. That is a legitimate position — but the answer is rarely to drop mid-course. It is to make HL tractable: identify which of the five syllabus strands is actually losing you marks, and repair that one first. If you are genuinely weighing SL against HL, the strategy call is the right place to decide it properly. If your real choice is between AA HL and AI HL, that comparison deserves its own page — and if AI at Standard Level is genuinely on the table too, it belongs in the same conversation, not a separate one later.

The HL Exploration: stalled, with no clear way to restart it.

The Mathematical Exploration is worth 20% of the final grade, and HL markers expect mathematics commensurate with the course — differential equations, advanced trigonometric modelling, complex analysis applied to something real. Most stalled explorations share one problem: a topic chosen for the title, not for the maths it contains. IB AA HL IA help here means stress-testing your topic and your level of mathematics before you write, not editing a draft at the end.

Coverage

The full AA HL syllabus, taught to HL depth

I am an IB maths Analysis and Approaches HL tutor, not a generalist. Every topic below is taught at HL depth — meaning not just how to perform the method, but when to select it and how to justify the choice, because that is where HL marks live. Coverage follows the current syllabus (first assessment 2021), across all three papers and the internal assessment. The syllabus itself is published on the IB's mathematics courses page.

  • Proof and reasoning: proof by induction in the contexts the syllabus ties it to (sums of series, divisibility, derivatives, De Moivre's theorem), proof by contradiction, and counterexamples that explain why they work rather than just stating them; the logic behind every "show that" mark in Paper 1
  • Functions and trigonometry at HL depth: composite and inverse functions, transformations, reciprocal and inverse trig functions, compound-angle identities and their use in integration
  • Complex numbers: modulus–argument form, de Moivre's theorem, roots of unity, polynomial roots and the conjugate root theorem, geometric interpretation in the Argand plane
  • Vectors in three dimensions: scalar and vector product, equations of lines and planes in 3D, intersections and angles, including between lines and planes
  • Further calculus: limits and L'Hôpital's rule, implicit differentiation and related rates, integration by parts and by substitution (including the judgement of which to reach for), volumes of revolution, differential equations (Euler's method, separation of variables, the y = vx substitution, integrating factors), and Maclaurin series built by substitution, products, differentiation and integration
  • Counting, probability and distributions: permutations and combinations, Bayes' theorem, normal and binomial distributions, and HL-only continuous probability density functions
  • Paper-specific preparation: Paper 1 without a calculator (exact values, algebraic stamina), Paper 2 with the GDC (using it to check, not to think), and Paper 3's two compulsory extended problems (one hour 15 minutes for both, later parts building on earlier ones)
  • The HL Mathematical Exploration: topic selection at genuine HL level, structure, and the mathematical communication criteria that decide the top bands

The method

Diagnosis first. Then a fixed weekly rhythm.

Before any teaching plan, I diagnose the exact step where your reasoning breaks — in a proof, in a Paper 3 part (c), in a calculus set-up. Then we work to a fixed weekly rhythm: every session opens with last week's wrong answers, because a mistake that is not revisited is a mistake you will repeat in May. Sessions run on Zoom with a shared Excalidraw whiteboard, and every session is recorded, summarised and archived into a searchable library you keep — so by exam season you own a personal archive of every error you ever made and how it was repaired.

What IB Maths students describe after the exams

One student worked through IB Mathematics and Physics with me across the full two-year Diploma, sat both exams well prepared, then went on to study applied physics at university and chose to continue lessons through the degree. That engagement is a public Google review on the Business Profile.

Another worked through IB Physics SL and Maths HL and finished with a 7 in Physics and a 5 in Maths HL, one mark away from a 6, calm in the exam hall after a year of one or two sessions a week. Calm in an HL exam hall is not a personality trait. It is what preparation feels like from the inside. That result is a public Google review too.

How much does IB Math AA HL tutoring cost?

IB programmes start at €400 a month. That price is for booking directly with me; tutoring platforms that list me add their own commission. The exact fee depends on where you are in the course and what the diagnosis shows, and it is set out before you commit to anything. The strategy call is free, so you can judge fit and value before spending anything at all. The first month is four one-hour sessions, with no minimum term after it.

Is AA HL actually necessary for engineering, physics or economics at university?

Frequently, yes — at competitive programmes, AA HL is a stated requirement or a strong preference for mathematics, physics, engineering and economics degrees. But "frequently" is not "always": requirements differ by university and country, so check your specific target courses. Of 30 UK engineering, computer science, economics and physics programmes checked for 2027 entry, 11 require or ask for AA; the full list is in what universities require. This is exactly the kind of decision we work through in the strategy call, before you commit to a course or a tutor.

What makes IB AA HL Paper 3 different from Papers 1 and 2?

Paper 3 is HL-only: two extended problems built on unfamiliar scaffolding — new notation, guided sub-questions, then a final part where the scaffolding is removed and you must generalise alone. It rewards reasoning with the GDC inside structures you have never seen, so training on recognisable question types fails. We prepare with unfamiliar multi-part problems under time conditions, not past-paper pattern-spotting.

Can you help with the HL Mathematical Exploration?

Yes — IB AA HL IA help is a regular part of my work. The most common failure is a topic chosen for its title rather than its mathematics, which caps the mark no matter how polished the writing. I help you stress-test topic choice for genuine HL-level content, structure the argument, and meet the communication criteria. The work stays yours; the guidance makes it mark-worthy.

We are in DP1 and already behind. Is it too late?

No, but the window is not unlimited. Most DP1 HL students who feel behind have one or two strands — usually functions/trigonometry or calculus — undermining everything built on top. A proper diagnosis finds those strands in the first sessions, and the weekly rhythm closes them while keeping pace with school. The students who struggle are the ones who wait until DP2 mocks to act.

How do we start?

Request a strategy call through the site. If the time and terms fit, you choose a slot straight away. The call is free — 15 minutes with a parent, then 30 with the student on a topic they choose, and you see how I work before anyone commits. If the fit is right, the first month is four one-hour sessions at a fixed weekly slot, with no minimum term after it. If it is not, I will say so plainly and suggest a better route.

What's the difference between AA HL and AI HL?

The two courses have many elements in common, but they approach them differently. AA HL is algebraic and proof-heavy — induction, complex numbers, Maclaurin series, differential equations. AI HL is modelling and statistics-heavy — matrices, Markov chains, graph theory, hypothesis testing. AA HL tends to suit pure maths, physics, and engineering; AI HL tends to suit computer science, data-leaning economics, and courses where statistical modelling matters more than proof. Neither is "the easy one" — they reward different kinds of mathematical thinking, and the right choice depends on what your target course actually needs, not on reputation.

How does proof by induction work in AA HL?

The syllabus ties induction to four kinds of statement: sums of series (prove that 1+2+3+...+n = n(n+1)/2), divisibility (prove that 7^n − 1 is divisible by 6 for all positive integers n), derivatives (a formula for the nth derivative of a function), and De Moivre's theorem for positive integer powers. The structure is always the same: base case, inductive hypothesis (assume true for n=k), inductive step (show true for n=k+1), and conclusion. The most common way marks are lost is skipping the conclusion sentence — the closing statement that the result holds for all n typically carries a reasoning mark of its own, and leaving it out costs that mark even when every line of working is correct.

How should I revise for Paper 3?

Start early — January of Year 2 at the latest, since Paper 3 rewards exposure to unfamiliar structure more than repetition of familiar ones. Do one full Paper 3 question per week under real timed conditions rather than several in one sitting, and review every step afterwards, including the ones that were correct but slow — Paper 3's real constraint is time, not knowledge. It currently gives you one hour 15 minutes for two problems, and the right way to split that time depends on the paper and on the student — which is exactly what timed practice is for. For the exact current marks, timing and what changes for the 2029 cohort, see IB Math AA HL exam papers.

What calculator is best for IB Math AA HL?

TI-84 Plus CE-T and Casio fx-CG50 are the standard choices, and both handle everything the AA HL syllabus needs, including complex-number operations. Whatever the model, the IB sets rules on which graphic display calculators are allowed and how they must be configured for the exam, so confirm the model and its exam setup with the school's exams officer well before mocks. Paper 1 allows no calculator at all.

What does a Grade 7 in AA HL actually require?

The exact boundaries move slightly every session, and I won't quote a specific figure I can't verify for your session — but as a general shape, a 7 means a high, consistent score across all three papers plus a strong Exploration, not a perfect one. AA HL's ceiling is genuinely hard to reach; a 7 here is read very differently by competitive universities than a 7 in an easier course.

How long should the AA HL Exploration be?

The IB's guidance is the same at SL and HL: approximately 12–20 pages with double line spacing, including diagrams and graphs but excluding the bibliography, and no word count. What differs at HL is criterion E, Use of Mathematics, which expects sophistication and rigour at the top levels. Page count is not the constraint — the five assessment criteria are. A long Exploration built on SL-depth mathematics scores worse than a shorter one that genuinely reaches HL depth.

Can I move from AI HL to AA HL mid-year?

Technically possible at some schools at the start of Year 2, but even the shared content is approached differently, and the AA-only content — induction, complex numbers, Maclaurin series — is substantial to pick up mid-course. The reverse move, AA HL to AI HL, is more common and somewhat less costly, but still not trivial. Switching after January of Year 2 is rarely advisable in either direction.

Does ChatGPT recommend Renzo Diaz for IB Math AA HL?

In one captured answer, yes. Asked “best ib math tutor in europe” on 6 October 2026, ChatGPT listed Renzo Diaz first and described him as “best for IB Maths AA HL”, pointing to proof, Paper 3 and the HL Exploration. The prompt did not mention AA HL. AI answers vary by user, date and model, so results may vary. The capture and how to check it yourself are in Best IB Math Tutor in Europe? ChatGPT’s First Pick: Renzo Diaz.

HL does not need more explanation. It needs a diagnosis.

AA HL is the course that decides whether a mathematically capable student gets into the programme they want — and it is unforgiving of vague preparation. If you are surviving rather than commanding it, the next step is a conversation, not a commitment. A free strategy call, a topic of the student's choosing, and an honest assessment either way. That is the whole offer.
