AA SL looks gentle next to HL, and that is exactly the trap. The algebra is assumed, the calculator is taken away in Paper 1, and the pace punishes every gap carried over from IGCSE. If your child is losing marks in this course, the cause is rarely the current chapter. It is an older step that never held — and re-hearing the textbook will not find it.

The IGCSE-to-SL slowdown: strong before, everything feels slower now.
AA SL does not introduce harder ideas than you can handle. It assumes faster algebra than you have been asked to show. Every new topic — functions, logarithms, calculus — quietly taxes your algebraic fluency, and the tax compounds. We find the exact step where your manipulation slows down and repair that, rather than re-teaching each topic from zero.
Paper 1 pace: it runs away from you before you're done.
Paper 1 is the no-calculator paper, and it is the clearest diagnostic in the whole course. Students who rely on the GDC for arithmetic and algebraic checking suddenly have to carry that load mentally, under time pressure, for ninety minutes. We train Paper 1 pace directly: which questions to bank early, how to lay out working so method marks survive a wrong final answer, and how to do the algebra cleanly enough that you do not need the calculator you do not have.
Calculus in disguise: you can do it — until the question wears a costume.
Differentiation and integration at SL are mechanically learnable, and most students do learn them. The grade is lost when a question wraps calculus inside functions, trigonometry, or a context you have not seen, and the first line of the solution is not obvious. We practise reading unfamiliar wrappers: identifying what the question is actually asking before touching a derivative, and building the habit of sketching the function before computing anything.
Exploration topic selection: it's due, and the topic is still "something with statistics, maybe".
The AA SL Mathematical Exploration is 20% of your grade, and the most common failure is choosing impressive mathematics instead of appropriate mathematics. A clean, well-communicated exploration using SL-level content will outscore a muddled one that reaches for HL ideas. The AA-or-AI decision: still deciding between AA SL, AA HL, or AI.
This decision closes doors if it is made on vibes. AA SL is the classic fit for economics, the natural sciences, and medicine in many countries — and it keeps several engineering routes open without the full HL load. But some engineering, physics, and mathematics degrees explicitly require AA HL. I will tell you plainly which target courses need what, and we settle it in the intake conversation, not after week three.

What an AA SL tutor online actually works through
The course has five topics, two papers, and one exploration. Coverage below follows the current syllabus (first assessment 2021), and we sequence it around your school calendar and exam session — not a fixed course outline. The full course specification is on the IB's mathematics courses page.
- Number and algebra: sequences and series (including compound growth and depreciation), exponents and logarithms, binomial expansion, proof — the fluency layer everything else sits on
- Functions: transformations, quadratics, rational and exponential functions, composite and inverse functions — and reading unfamiliar function behaviour before computing
- Geometry and trigonometry: the unit circle, the Pythagorean and double-angle identities, sine and cosine rule, vectors in 2D and 3D, and the circle theorems that appear in Paper 2 contexts
- Statistics and probability: distributions, regression (including reading GDC regression output correctly), normal distribution, and the probability tree questions that decide grades at the top of the markband
- Calculus: differentiation, the chain rule, optimisation, integration and area, kinematics — plus the combined functions-and-calculus questions that separate a 6 from a 7

The method
Diagnosis first, then a fixed weekly rhythm
We start by finding the exact step where your reasoning broke — not the topic, the step. Each week opens with last week's wrong answers, reworked from scratch, so errors are retired rather than repeated. Every session is recorded, summarised, and archived into a searchable library you keep. We work on Zoom with a shared Excalidraw whiteboard; I am based in Milan and teach online worldwide. Four years, from IGCSE Additional Maths through AA SL
