Renzo Diaz works with four recurring student profiles: capable students whose grades have plateaued despite consistent effort, students who have concluded they are "not a maths person," students moving faster than their classroom can teach them, and students who can get the answer but can't explain why it works. I don't work with "bad at maths" students, because in ten years of IB Math and Physics, I haven't met one. What I have met are capable students stuck in one of four specific patterns below. In every case, the problem was not ability — it was a mismatch between how their mind works and how they were being taught.

The Hardworker Plateau

The IB is an anti-pattern exam. It punishes the study method that works everywhere else: drilling one problem type until you've mastered it. The IB always asks something different — the same core concepts, dropped into a situation your child has never seen. It doesn't test whether they can repeat. It tests whether they understood deeply enough to apply. Students here put in the hours. The method is wrong, not the effort.

What changes

  • We recalibrate the target. We stop practising for repetition and start building what the IB actually measures: transfer. The ability to use an underlying idea when the question changes shape. That is where capable students plateau — and where the grade suddenly breaks upward.

The "I'm Not a Maths Person" Myth

The "I'm Not a Maths Person" Myth: a false conclusion, built on a method that failed them.

Somewhere in the last few years, they stopped believing they could do this. Sometimes "I hate maths" is easier to say than "I don't think I'm good at this." By sixteen or seventeen, that belief can harden into a wall — and quietly shut down any real chance of improving.

What changes

  • We dismantle the belief before we touch the maths. By going back far enough to find the actual structural gap, we show them the truth: it was never that they couldn't do it. It was that the method was too tangled for anyone to follow. When the logic finally clicks, the confidence follows automatically.

The Bored Misdiagnosis

The Bored Misdiagnosis: labelled lazy or difficult, actually just underchallenged.

They see where a topic is going while the rest of the class is still on the basics. Once the lesson stops challenging them, they check out — and somewhere along the way they get labelled lazy, difficult, or distracted. It was never laziness. The problem may simply be a mismatch between the pace of the room and the pace at which they think.

What changes

  • We run at their actual processing speed. We don't re-cover what they already own. We go straight to the edge of their competence and push beyond it. The "laziness" disappears the moment the cognitive load matches their actual capacity.

I've yet to meet a student who was genuinely bad at maths. I have met plenty who were let down by how it was taught.

The ChatGPT Crutch

The ChatGPT Crutch: they get the answer right, and can't explain why it works.

In an AI-assisted world, getting the answer is trivial. The IB exam doesn't care if they can get the answer — it cares if they can recognise the underlying idea, explain why the method works, choose it when the problem morphs, and reproduce the reasoning under time pressure without the help. AI gives them the fish. We build the fishing rod.

What changes

  • We wean them off the AI dependency. The work shifts from "finding the answer" to "defending the logic". If they can't explain it without looking at a screen, they don't know it yet. We build the decision-making muscle that AI can't replace.
