Dubai has one of the largest concentrations of international schools anywhere in the world, and a large share of them run the IB Diploma. With that scale comes a specific pattern: students who are diligent, who complete the homework and attempt the past papers, whose grades still don't move the way the effort suggests they should.
The cause is almost never a content gap. It is usually a method-selection gap — the student has more than one valid way to approach a problem and cannot recognise, quickly enough, which one the question is actually rewarding. In IB Math AA HL that gap is the difference between a 5 and a 7; in AI SL, between a 4 and a 6. Dubai's IB World Schools — among them GEMS World Academy Dubai and Jumeirah English Speaking School — run the same syllabus, so the diagnostic applies the same way regardless of which one your child attends.

School reports record outcomes, not causes: a grade, a comment, occasionally a remark about "needs more practice." Before any plan is built, I diagnose the exact step where the reasoning broke — whether that step lives in this term's topic or three years back in algebra. That diagnosis, not the report card, is what the weekly work runs on.

International schools ask families to commit to a Math course and level while the student has never sat a real IB paper. The choice shapes university options and is expensive to reverse mid-Diploma. I walk families through both courses with real exam questions before the school deadline, including what each university faculty actually requires.

Dubai's international-school population turns over quickly — postings end, contracts move, families relocate mid-year. A student arriving mid-Diploma from a different curriculum inherits the IB clock with gaps shaped by whatever they studied before. The first month is structural triage: find where the previous curriculum left holes, rebuild those, and align to the new school's assessment calendar from the next mock onward.

This is the most common pattern I see in Dubai: homework done, past papers attempted, nothing skipped — and the grade stays flat. The cause is rarely willingness. It is a specific, repeatable error the extra practice keeps reinforcing rather than correcting. Naming it precisely is what turns the same hours into a different result.

The IB score isn't the only thing universities look at — but for competitive Mathematics, Physics and Engineering courses, it's the threshold that gets an application read. The AA/AI choice matters more at some of these than families are usually told.
