IB Mathematics · Online, one-to-one · AA & AI, SL & HL

An online IB Maths tutor for international-school families in Germany, on German time.

Renzo Diaz is an IB Mathematics tutor based in Italy, teaching IB since 2016 and teaching one-to-one online across all four courses — Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, Standard and Higher Level — and currently teaching an IB Math AA SL student in Munich. His documented results include Grade 7 in both IB Math AI SL exam papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2, May 2024), and a 4.9 / 5 rating on Google from 19 public reviews since June 2020 (as of October 2026). Milan is on the same time zone as Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin, so lessons fit straight after school, and the first step is a free 45-minute strategy call. Lessons are in English or Spanish.

For a German university, the Maths level decides more than the grade. Under the rules Germany has applied to the IB Diploma since 2021, Maths AA or AI at Higher Level opens direct access to every field of study, while either course at Standard Level gives subject-restricted access outside mathematics, the sciences and engineering — unless the school is on the KMK's list of exceptions (DAAD summary). A family with a Munich university in mind settles the Maths level with that in view, early in the Diploma.

The families I work with tend to value a plan they can actually verify — what was covered, what changed, what is still open — over a reassurance that "things are improving." The recorded, searchable session archive exists for exactly that reason: it is evidence, not a progress report someone has to take on trust. Germany's IB World Schools — in Munich, Munich International School and Bavarian International School among them — run the same syllabus, so the diagnostic applies the same way regardless of which one your child attends.

The unexplained Grade 4: the report says it, nobody can say why.

School reports record outcomes, not causes: a grade, a comment, occasionally a remark about focus. Before any plan is built, I diagnose the exact step where the reasoning broke — whether that step lives in this term's topic or three years back in algebra. That diagnosis, not the report card, is what the weekly work runs on.

AA or AI, SL or HL: the choice, made with half the information.

International schools ask families to commit to a Math course and level while the student has never sat a real IB paper. The choice shapes university options and is expensive to reverse mid-Diploma. I walk families through both courses with real exam questions before the school deadline, including what each university faculty actually requires.

Mid-Diploma transfer: arrived from another curriculum, partway through.

A posting to Germany often lands a family mid-way through their child's schooling, and a student arriving mid-Diploma from a different curriculum inherits the IB clock with gaps shaped by whatever they studied before. The first month is structural triage: find where the previous curriculum left holes, rebuild those, and align to the new school's assessment calendar from the next mock onward.

The fixed-posting timeline: one shot at the Diploma, no room for a slow start.

When a family's time in one place is tied to a defined posting, there usually isn't a second attempt at getting the Diploma right. A diagnostic approach in the first term — finding exactly where a student's reasoning is weakest, before a full year of teaching builds on top of it — matters more here than in a more open-ended timeline.

Coverage

All four IB Maths courses. Find the one your child is sitting.

AA and AI are different subjects wearing the same name, and SL and HL are different workloads again. Each has its own page with the situations, syllabus coverage and exam technique specific to it.

IB Math AA SL

Analysis and Approaches, Standard Level.

IB Math AA HL

Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level — including Paper 3.

IB Math AI SL

Applications and Interpretation, Standard Level.

IB Math AI HL

Applications and Interpretation, Higher Level — including Paper 3.

What's actually examined

The exam your child is sitting.

AA HL and AI SL are examined differently — knowing the real structure changes how the weekly work is built. Figures below cover AA HL (the most demanding of the four courses) and AI SL (the course in the documented case: Grade 3 to two Grade 7 papers); AA SL and AI HL sit between them and have their own dedicated pages.

The method

A documented weekly system — the same one, wherever your child studies.

Every week opens with last week's wrong answers, because wrong answers are the cheapest source of marks. We work on what is live from school, advance the syllabus in order, and hold the same rhythm through mock weeks, IA deadlines and report cycles. Every session is recorded, summarised, and archived into a searchable library your child keeps for the entire Diploma.

The diagnosis starts from one function. For f(x) = x² − 6x + 8, a student may solve f(x) = 0 correctly and get 2 and 4. Then ask where the function is decreasing: since f′(x) = 2x − 6, it decreases for x < 3, with the turning point at x = 3. Confusing the roots with the turning point is a conceptual gap that a longer list of quadratics will not repair. Bring a recent marked question to the strategy call; it shows whether the obstacle is algebra, derivatives or explaining the interval.

Documented · public reviews since 2020

The same evidence standard, wherever the student is based.

The method does not depend on geography — it depends on rhythm. The weekly system runs the same everywhere: diagnose, rebuild, drill against real exam questions, record everything.

The clearest documented case is a student who moved from a Grade 3 to two Grade 7 papers across a full two-year Diploma, in IB Math AI SL — delivered entirely online. It is a public Google review on the Business Profile, one of 19 reviews behind a 4.9 / 5 rating on Google (as of October 2026), with the IB Math AI SL exam results (May 2024) documented component by component. Open the profile and read them yourself; none of it depends on taking my word for it.

Real admission requirements

Where the IB score actually leads.

For a family in Germany the table below usually includes TUM. Its row is the German recognition floor, and the Maths level — HL or SL — decides which degrees it opens. The wider picture is in Math AA vs AI: what universities require. The German rule, with its grade conversion, is set out in the Swiss and German rules.

University admission requirements for IB candidates: the requirement and a note for each university
UniversityRequirementNote
University of Oxford38, 39 or 40 points including core, by course; Engineering Science asks for 40 with 776 at HLEvery course that requires Mathematics accepts AA or AI at HL, Chemistry apart; Computer Science states no preference between them.
University of Cambridge41-42 points, 7-7-6 at Higher LevelEngineering asks for Maths AA and Physics at HL; a student whose school does not offer AA should contact a College. Colleges often ask for a 7 in Physics or another science.
Imperial College LondonMechanical Engineering: minimum 40 points with 6 in HL Maths and HL Physics; typical offer 40 with 7s in bothAA is preferred over AI, though both are formally accepted.
TU Munich (TUM)IB recognition: 24 points, at least a 4 in each subject, three subjects at HL and a natural scienceMaths AA or AI at HL opens every field of study; at SL, access excludes maths, science and engineering degrees (German rules since 2021).

Does AA or AI at SL limit a German university application?

It can. Under the rules Germany has applied to the IB Diploma since 2021, Maths AA or AI at Higher Level gives direct access to every field of study; at Standard Level, access is subject-restricted and excludes mathematics, the sciences and engineering, unless the school is on the KMK's list of exceptions. Recognition also needs 24 points, at least a 4 in each subject, three subjects at HL and a natural science (DAAD summary). TUM checks all of this through a uni-assist preliminary review of the Diploma (TUM guidance).

Can you help us choose between AA and AI before the school deadline?

Yes, and it is one of the highest-value conversations of the year before the choice locks in. We look at real exam questions from both courses, the student's algebra fluency, and the entry requirements of the university courses actually being targeted, then decide on evidence.

We're on a fixed posting and won't be in Germany for the whole Diploma. Does that change anything?

It changes the priority, not the method. Sessions are online everywhere, so a mid-Diploma relocation doesn't interrupt the weekly rhythm or the recorded archive — the student keeps both wherever the family moves next.

What results can we realistically expect?

I don't promise grades — anyone who guarantees a specific number is lying to you. I provide documented, checkable precedent: a Grade 3 to two Grade 7 papers in IB Math AI SL, stated in the student's own Google review, and 19 public reviews you can verify yourself. What your child achieves depends on the starting point, the work between sessions, and the time available before the exam.

How do we start?

Request a strategy call through the site: answer a few questions and, if the time and terms fit, choose a slot. The call is free — 15 minutes with a parent, then 30 with the student on a topic they choose — so you see how I teach before anyone commits. If the fit is right, the first month is four one-hour sessions, with no minimum term after it.

Has ChatGPT recommended an IB Math tutor in Europe?

In one captured answer to “best ib math tutor in europe” (6 October 2026), ChatGPT listed Renzo Diaz first, as “best for IB Maths AA HL”. Lessons are online from Italy, so families in Germany can work with him one-to-one on a weekly slot agreed around their schedule. AI answers vary by user, date and model, so results may vary. Read the capture and how to verify it yourself.

Ready to see if this is the right fit for your child?

The strategy call is free and commits you to nothing. If I don't think the system will move your child meaningfully, I will tell you directly — I'd rather lose a client than take on a case I can't help.
